Rinkeby, Segregation and I

I've always heard from people in Stockholm that there is an area called Rinkeby that is so full of immigrants and you can even hardly see Swedes there. So, I decided to go there, yesterday. I wanted to go and discover this mini-Non-Swedish area.

My first impression when I arrived at the metro underground was, "OMG, Why the metro underground looks horrible! why there is no decoration at the metro !! Like how it is in , for example, Karlaplan (Where Swedes dress/walk like there is some kind of a fashion show)! No ads, no pretty pics on the walls like how it's the case at the average metro' walls in the city"

You can see here and compare. The first picture is from Rinkeby and the second is from T-centralen:-

Then, I saw the people passing and they all looked Africans and spoke Somalian. The area had so many people from Somalia and very few immigrants from other countries. I saw Arabs and Mexicans.

It was Maghreb time and I saw several men with beards heading to the mosque which was just right next to the metro gate.

I walked a bit and found a restaurant full with only Somalies! Everything felt and looked so different from the average Swedish area. It felt like I was not in Stockholm. There was lots of eye contacts which I liked, because typically Swedes don't make eye contact with strangers. This applies to some many places in Europe not only in Sweden.

At Rinkeby, almost all the girls were with hijab and I was not. That felt awkward. I entered a grocery store; run by Iraqi young men. I was checking the store products and trying to find something to buy. Then, all my memories from Yemen came back to me. I found products that I would never find in a Swedish store.

Few moments later, one Arab guy passed by me and gave me some remarks; which was a kind of harassment. I have never got sexually harassed in Stockholm and this could be my first time to feel so. I left the store after buying, of course, Hommos.

I said goodbye to Rinkeby with a feeling that Stockholm is segregated. Sana'a, my hometown, has been always segregated as well. The rich lived at one side and the poor at the other side. The Yemenis lived in one side and the immigrants lived at the other side. So, I know what social segregation means. There is an area in Sana'a called Safia that's heavily inhibited by Somalis. We used to call is Maqadishu. I bet Rinkeby is Stockholm's Safia. This is not new for me but it was interesting to discover this side of Stockholm.

    1. Where in this text do you find any racist remarks about Somalis?
I re-read the text after seeing your comment and all I see is statements that during her visit in Rinkeby it were mainly Somali people there.

    2. First of all i can't see anywhere in the text she wrote that she says there's anything wrong with somalis. I will, however, tell you what's wrong with them. They're uncivilized people who hardly know how to use forks, they're more often than not criminals, they lie they cheat they steal, the majority of them can't read or write, they rarely learn the language (they don't even try), they live on welfare money from the state more than any other group in Sweden (around 80-90% of them), they don't understand western standard of basic hygiene, they send much of their welfare money to terrorist organizations, they use drugs (gat) more than any other group in Sweden... There's simply no positive side of having them here. It might be racist to point out all these less than flattering attributes of somali people, nevertheless they are completely true so i stand by them. There ARE nice somalis of course... just extremely few of them.

    3. I can sense from her tone...that she is being racist and thinks that Somalis are some kind of strange people. Just shut-up and go back to Yemen if you r going to be racist in Sweden. Remember SD does not differentiate between Arabs and Somalis.

    4. You can hear it on her tone, well in that case! Ofcourse she's racist.... riksmongo

    5. Get a fucking break, Anonymous. Look at these Somali parasites living in the stone ages. Why should a modern, free person like them? I don't see one reason. And if you like them so much, do us the fucking favor and move to some Somali shit hole and take the Somalis in Europe with you. We will neither miss you nor them.

  3. You were "Born to write?" Are you serious? I'd be hard-pressed to find a self-procalimed writer that was worse at being a scribe. Your sentences, for the most part, are written at the level of a 3rd grader, at best. Youre laughable piece on Yemen and its "Qat" problem is such an unbelievable cry for "Look at me! Im doing SOMETHING, heck, Im even an activist!" You want to help Yemen? Try and abolish Islam's evil grip on your people. In short, some real change. Oh, and by the way, I'm an ex-muslim.

  4. Stockholm is the only major city i Europe that keeps the muslims out of the inner city. A city of political correct hypokrats. - Liberals. You can go to any town i Europe (London, Paris, Brussels, Hamburg. Amssterdam, Copenhagen etc etc and there are large areas in the inner city full of migrants living there. But not in Stockholm, but they are world champions at calling other people as "rasists". Stockholm is the Mekka of hypokrats.

  5. I grew up in Stockholm in it has turned in to the most segregated city in Sweden. Swedish people pride themselves with feelings of solidarity, multiculturalism, generosity etc BUT most of Swedish people do not want these thirld world refugees to live in close proximity to where they live. we have a political and cultural media elite that lives completely segregated from the society they themselves propagate for so hard. Stockholm, the inner city, is truly the capital of hypocrisy.

  7. It's funny to see the reactions to blogs like this. The referees give you a red card when as much as reading a word that's not politically correct.

How come the people that yearns for a multicultural society and claims to be the ones protecting all peoples same value and rights are the ones that can't accept opinions and views that differs from theirs.

It's sad that you can't address problems without getting branded a racist.

I wonder if, statistically, Somalis are majority in Rinkeby, otherwise the Arab lady's mentioning only Somalis everywhere is in line with the Arabs racism towards Black Africans, the Somalis here.

If there could be a role-reversal among the men and women (in Rinkeby for starters), if only for a day - and cover that event by all media...

Good luck with your writing - don't let anyone put you down!

  12. Regarding the decorations in the metro there´s a reason why it´s like that.
Whenever any decorations is put up they get destroyed withing hours. The same goes for much of public services. Busses, schools, librarys, parks etc etc gets vandalized. Not much gratitude towards the swedes who pays for all of it including social welfare and so on.

I´ve lived in Sweden and was surprised that there´s no public discussion about it. Why so silent?

    Thanks´for an interesting blog btw.

I read an article on "www.avpixlat.info" a little bit of racist stuff in there but, whatever lets get to the thing I were so supposed to tell you(i really hope you read this).

There were a group rape by 7-8immigrants in a "immigrant-house",where you learn Swedish and so on,well this rape were on a mother that got two children, the woman got really bad hurt in her..yeah you know v*g*na,how is this mom going to take care of her children? Well maybe she got a man that can help her but what if they have seperated? What is she supposed to do?

Now when you heard this on Avpixlat,im going to check it on "www.expressen.se" there is nothing about the mom,and how she feels and what happened to her,not a single f*cking sentence! It's all about those immigrants which the media thinks that THEY need help and not the young woman..
    Seriosly sweden..WAKE UP!
The whole world are laughing at us,come on!

  33. Hi
Its totally unacceptable in any sense for some like this lady to write such comments after her stay in Swden for short time. Despite poore social intergrations between indigenous Swdes and and foreigners in the country and that is the system and not the social. Therefore, I am afraid for this newly arrived Muslim women to happen into a situation where she can't manage her live in this country, because racism has not position in this society. There some sort of racists in the country but this are more wise than this stranger person. alThough I am 100% sure that she w'll not even get place in the racists in the country, I am afraid for her to be kicked from both sides and die before her day comes!!!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Intriguing that so many nasty remarks comes from somalis...and the racism directed towards her...

Seriously the lady wrote that there were many Somalis, not that there is anything wrong with Somalis. And it is a very bad thing that Sweden is segregated this way,we need to be integrated. It is not a good thing that different groups lives in enclaves and have little interaction with other ethnic groups. There is racism abound with both ethnic Swedes and other ethnic groups..

BTW I am a Swede and my neighbors are mainly Somalis, I like most of them even though we have very different backgrounds. You know why? Because we show each other respect.

  37. @ The last commentary, Sure it becomes a sort of racism if all commenters are Somalis. But, I also think that the writer puts a kind of "negative" focuss on the Somalis. I am saying this because, Rekiby is a foreigners dominated area, but not an area for Somalis only, I can guess she met foreigners as she arrived the area, but can't think that all she saw were only Somalis and spoke Somali "Then, I saw the people passing and they all looked Africans and spoke Somalian". Here, in the both she also "magnified" that Somalis belong to different "coloured" easily identifiable because from the other ethnicities and this why I guess that she saw many foreigners at her arrival but could see the "blacks". secondly, she said "I walked a bit and found a restaurant full with only Somalies!", Here she looks to have overlooked that she could find many men/women of same ethnicity in elsewhere in Rinkeby and other areas of Stockholm due to the poor social intergration we have in Sweden. However, I would say its a national issue and there's a need for better interaction betwwen different ethnicities in the country including Swedes. Therefore, this the such a debates regarding segregations will continue until the state will sett policies to tackle race-based groups.

Somali peaple are civilized more then other third world, they have rich country also, what they need only is peace and low order in their country then world will see if they stay in westren lands or not such Stockholm! Do you know before somalian imagrant came to the westren countries there were not any muslim can show other their muslimasam such Hijjab! Somali people only did and did also Dacwah bixamdillah! Yes it can be jobbless but why? It's only the system of Sweden and the languege of Swedish which they can't go over! Do you know what is goes on all African and Arab land? The bussines leads only Somalian communties! If Somalian peaple get back stark government they will lead the world every site that's why now Turkish government and chines ibtresting Somalian caontries! If somalian peaple were nomard in the past and live know all over the world surely they will back their home different advantage of every side! Do you know Somali peaple is the community can helpe each other? Example your country that you are from theres so many two brothers have their famalies on of them sufferring and poor goes to die and the other who's rich never help him! So in my conclution to say is my brothers Arab community need to learn more positive from their brothern Somalian, and Swedish peaple they are so close peaple and needs to be social learn from Somalian community how to be happy and to help others each other and to be open!

Other side if you would like to comment issue be positive not to negative! We as Somalian and Yemen peaple have good relation every side so don't create problem betwean us! Other side think about every body who came enemy with muslim community or any community can face problem! So I hope to apologize to Somalian Community.

I my selve live in Sweden near 4years, the day I came to Sweden after 6months I get start work in school, I teach math, somali, arabic and english subjects. There's no one Somalian likes to take social walfare the problem work market in Sweden is open for non Swedish citizen.

You know Somalian community is the only community that have their own culture with their religion? Westren cauntries coaldn't change Somalian peaple even those children born here in Sweden! Think about those other muslims who came to Sweden such like you how many leaved their culture, their religion?

  60. After I wrote a blog post about my trip to Rinkeby titled with Rinkeby, Segregation and I, tens of comments; mainly of hate, poured on me like I have never experienced before. I was called lots of bad names but mainly I was called racist! My post had small readership till it was published on www.Avpixlat.info (who published it without my permission) and then it had thousands of people reading it. I think it became a controversial topic but I honestly think I was misunderstood/misinterpreted.

When I initially wrote the post I just wrote it based on my own fresh eyes to Stockholm but I later found out lots of information about Rinkeby and segregation in Stockholm from friends. One of my friends, journalist Shora Esmailian wrote to me, "It is very good and important to illustrate the segregation in Sweden and I do think that you did it with a good heart. But you did it with no historical view- Why did Rinkeby get so segregated would be the first question to ask!" She pointed out so many important points that I had no idea about.

When I blogged about Rinkeby, my mere intention was just to share my thoughts and experience in the short visit i did to the area. I never ever meant to be racist or Islam-phobic. I'm myself Muslim and have an African origin in my blood; how on earth I could pick on my own religion and racial roots!!! If the social segregation topic in Sweden is a very sensitive one, it's totally not my fault. I think Sweden and Swedes have to deal with it gracefully and stop picking on who writes about it.

    1. You are pretty blind if you think that it is Swedes that are complaining about your article. All the hate and "racist!" posts are written in poor English, poor Swedish, Arabic or Somali. It is reasonable to think that the hateful commenters are instead coming from this somali page: http://somaliska.com/rinkeby-waa-muqdishada-sweden-waa-meel-soomaali-ka-buuxdo/

I have no idea what the article says but some of the comments are in Swedish, and they sound a lot like the angry comments here.

The article on Avpixlat, on the other hand, was positive to your blogpost.

  62. Well done Afrah, I really acknowledge your boldness in addressing many of the social and political problems back in Yemen.
Well, regarding your piece about Rinkeby, i would agree that "Rinkeby is full of Somalis" is not a racist remarks rather a description of a real situation.

As a Somali who spent his entire life in Yemen and lives now in Sweden, I really had a nostalgia when i remembered places like Safia in San'a and every thing related to that wonderful country which i hold dear. I should mention also that ,as you have already said, there are lot of segregation and discrimination that needed to be addressed.

I think people should read this article in more rational way rather than the emotional way, Solving the hardships that Somalis faces in Yemen is not the task of Afrah, i think the intention was to illuminate and link between the existing situations in Rinkbey and Safia.

I encourage you to write more and applaud your efforts.
    Thanks,
    Osman
